Framed: How to Capture Stunning Pet Portraits with Creative Composition
March 14, 2025
When you hear the word framed, you might think of a beautiful portrait hanging on the wall. But before an image ever makes it to print, the way it’s framed in-camera plays a huge role in how impactful it is.
Framing isn’t just about centering your pet in the shot—it’s about using your surroundings to create depth, draw attention, and tell a story. Here are some of my favorite ways to use framing techniques in pet photography, along with examples from my own work!
FINDINg natural frames
Nature provides some of the best frames if you know where to look! Tree branches, fences, or even patches of tall grass can surround your subject and gently guide the viewer’s eye. I love using natural frames to add depth and a little artistic flair.
Playing with foreground elements
Instead of focusing only on what’s right in front of me, I like to experiment with what’s in the foreground. A slightly blurred toy, a patch of flowers, or even a peeking paw can add a sense of depth and dimension to an image, making it feel more immersive.
using the environment to frame your subject
One of my favorite ways to add depth and visual interest to an image is by incorporating elements in the environment to create a subtle frame around the subject. In this shot, the wooden fence structure naturally draws the viewer’s eye toward these two stunning pups, adding a sense of balance and harmony. The soft, blurred background helps isolate them as the focal point while still providing context and warmth to the scene.
Leading Lines That Guide the Eye
Pathways, fences, or even a dog’s leash can serve as leading lines that naturally draw the viewer’s gaze straight to the subject. This technique makes an image feel more dynamic and intentional.
See the world through a frame
Framing is one of those magical little tricks that can transform an ordinary snapshot into a piece of art. Next time you’re photographing your pet (or anything else!), take a moment to look for creative ways to use your surroundings. You might be surprised at the difference it makes!
